National History Day Project: Artificial Insemination Technologies in Agriculture.
How we chose our topic:
Being unique individuals, we wanted to research a topic that Mr. Lozano has never seen before
and we wanted to do something that pertained to Cita’s favorite subject; food. What better topic could
we have picked, than the reproductive technology that revolutionized agriculture? In all seriousness, we
felt that the invention of artificial insemination was definitely a turning point in history, with a plethora
of supportive research and statistics. In addition, the invention of artificial insemination did not only
affect one industry or area, but affected our whole lives, in multiple continents.
How we conducted our research:
We began by determining the major topics that we wanted to address. We then did some
preliminary research in order to have a more solid foundation of knowledge, and a sturdier “jumping off
point” to begin seriously delving into our subject. Having been extremely successful in our research, we
soon learned that the affects were far too widespread for us to make use of all studies and
documentation. This forced us to limit our search to agricultural technologies and research that were
developed and are commonly used in these United States of America. The major topics that we will be
highlighting in our website are: the history of artificial insemination, the development of artificial
insemination in American agriculture, the effect of artificial insemination on the livestock industry, the
effect of artificial insemination on the consumers and how artificial insemination has helped further
endangered wildlife conservation programs.
How we selected our presentation category:
As writing a paper was ruled out, we were left to choose between a website, exhibit or
documentary. Neither of us is super computer savvy, so creating a documentary was a little impractical.
Additionally, an exhibit requires considerable skill and monetary investments, so we were left with a
website.
How our topic relates to the NHD theme:
The theme for this year’s NHD topics are: Turning Points in History. Our topic is centered on the
invention of a technique that completely revolutionized the production of animals for food. With an
exploding population, farmers have been consistently faced with the issue of feeding more people, with
less land, less workers and less money. The development of a technology that allows for greater
reproductive efficiency, thus less wasted time and money, and more animals is certainly a turning point
in history, as it has affected producers and consumers all over the world. On average, one American
farmer feeds over 100 people in more countries than just ours. Artificial insemination is one of the
things that make this possible. Concluding, A.I is a turning point in history because it affects entire
industries and populations of people.
